Water and Wastewater Management

The Company recognizes "water" as a key sustainability issue, especially for hotels and resorts located near natural water sources and communities. To address this, the Company is committed to reducing water consumption and improving water use efficiency across all operations. Strategies, policies, and guidelines have been developed to ensure responsible water management, minimize environmental impact, and mitigate the risks of water scarcity. The Company also ensures compliance with all water quality and quantity regulations, and takes corrective actions where needed to continuously improve performance.

Target

  • Reduce water consumption by at least 5% compared to the baseline year

Performance

Note: In 2024, water consumption data reporting began for SAii Koh Samui Villas. Due to room and swimming pool renovations during the year, the water consumption per unit was relatively high compared to the Company’s other hotels.

Business Opportunities and Risks

Effective water management presents a vital opportunity for hotels to maintain uninterrupted operations throughout the year without facing water shortages. It also serves as a means to foster positive relationships with surrounding communities through the conservation and restoration of natural water sources, contributing to long-term shared sustainability.

In addition, the continuation of sustainability commitments inspired by the Boon Rawd Brewery Group creates further opportunities to strengthen environmental collaboration and develop impactful projects in the future.

However, the business remains exposed to risks related to water scarcity, particularly during dry seasons or in areas with limited resources. Without efficient management, such challenges could affect hotel operations and service delivery. Moreover, utilizing shared resources with nearby communities without proper wastewater control measures may lead to environmental impacts, potential conflicts, and a lack of social acceptance.

Management Guidelines

SHR places great importance on managing water resources efficiently and sustainably, taking into account the geographical characteristics and appropriate water sources in each location. To promote water conservation, hotels under SHR have implemented various measures, such as:

Company-Wide Implementation

All water-saving measures are applied throughout the company and across all self-managed hotels under SHR. Each property records monthly water usage and conducts regular maintenance of water systems to ensure continuous improvement and compliance with internal efficiency targets. This systematic approach supports consistent implementation and monitoring of water conservation actions company-wide.

Using Water-Saving Technology

  • Hotels have adopted water-saving technologies, such as low-flow sanitary ware and sensor-activated faucets to reduce unnecessary water usage. Additionally, condensate water from air conditioning systems is reused for foot washing before entering guest rooms, helping to reduce the use of clean water and maximize resource efficiency.

Engaging Guests in Conservation Efforts

  • Signage is placed in guest rooms to encourage the reuse of bed linens and towels, thereby reducing water consumption from laundry operations.

Reusing Treated Water

  • Hotels have wastewater treatment systems that allow treated water to be reused for gardening or other non-potable activities.
  • The quality of treated water is regularly monitored to ensure safety and maintain standards.
  • Water storage systems are improved to reduce leakage and evaporation, while equipment is regularly maintained for long-term efficiency.

In-Room Communication

  • Signage in guest rooms encourages water conservation by inviting guests to reuse bed linens and towels. This promotes responsible water use and supports environmentally conscious behavior.
