The Company recognizes "water" as a key sustainability issue, especially for hotels and resorts located near natural water sources and communities. To address this, the Company is committed to reducing water consumption and improving water use efficiency across all operations. Strategies, policies, and guidelines have been developed to ensure responsible water management, minimize environmental impact, and mitigate the risks of water scarcity. The Company also ensures compliance with all water quality and quantity regulations, and takes corrective actions where needed to continuously improve performance.
Note: In 2024, water consumption data reporting began for SAii Koh Samui Villas. Due to room and swimming pool renovations during the year, the water consumption per unit was relatively high compared to the Company’s other hotels.
Effective water management presents a vital opportunity for hotels to maintain uninterrupted operations throughout the year without facing water shortages. It also serves as a means to foster positive relationships with surrounding communities through the conservation and restoration of natural water sources, contributing to long-term shared sustainability.
In addition, the continuation of sustainability commitments inspired by the Boon Rawd Brewery Group creates further opportunities to strengthen environmental collaboration and develop impactful projects in the future.
However, the business remains exposed to risks related to water scarcity, particularly during dry seasons or in areas with limited resources. Without efficient management, such challenges could affect hotel operations and service delivery. Moreover, utilizing shared resources with nearby communities without proper wastewater control measures may lead to environmental impacts, potential conflicts, and a lack of social acceptance.
SHR places great importance on managing water resources efficiently and sustainably, taking into account the geographical characteristics and appropriate water sources at each location. To better understand and address water-related challenges, the Company conducts risk assessments using internationally recognized tools, such as the WRI Aqueduct Water Risk Atlas, which evaluates both country-level and local water stress. Based on this assessment, SAii Koh Samui Villas and Santiburi Koh Samui are located in high water-stress areas, while SAii Laguna Phuket and SAii Phi Phi Island Village are classified as low water-stress areas. However, despite this classification, SAii Phi Phi Island Village frequently experiences water shortages during the dry season and is therefore also considered a water-stress area by the Company.
Recognizing these conditions, SHR actively engages with stakeholders in affected communities and incorporates local feedback into water management and development initiatives. These efforts help to strengthen water availability while addressing broader environmental concerns. To promote water conservation, hotels under SHR have introduced various measures, such as installing water-saving fixtures and technologies, adopting rainwater harvesting and storage systems, regularly monitoring and reporting water consumption, providing training for employees and raising guest awareness on responsible water use, as well as collaborating with local communities on water conservation and reservoir support projects.
All water-saving measures are applied throughout the company and across all self-managed hotels under SHR. Each property records monthly water usage and conducts regular maintenance of water systems to ensure continuous improvement and compliance with internal efficiency targets. This systematic approach supports consistent implementation and monitoring of water conservation actions company-wide.
